BRAIN SPACE HAS THREE MAIN FEATURES;  

MIND MAPPING WITH YOURSELF

The concept is a documenting tool for your own seperate thoughts. It should be easy to use when inspiration strike to write down an idea even on the run and create a mind map.

MIND MAPPING WITH YOUR TEAM

This feature focuses on the ability to smoothly invite teammembers and to enhance the common creative process.

The prototype seen here is showing the create and invite to mind map function. 

MIND MAPPING WITH STRANGERS

This last concept may be the most interesting in the app. Through this feature people can add ideas onto your mind map and you can also join an already existing mind map through the hash tagged theme others have given their mind map. With more people joining the mindmap the capacity of idea generation increases. This feature would be especially recommended to people that work creatively on their own or people that need a fresh perspective on possible ideas.  Part of the process can be seen below.

Brain Space is an app concept which I created together with my team to help creatives generate ideas through mind mapping. Either alone, together with teammates or with actual strangers to get a fresh insight.

GENERATIVE RESEARCH

This project started from a module called ”Industry Week” at Hyper Island. 

During that module we researched the industry. Not only in relation to understanding our future prospects but also to try to define needs that existed in the industry.

 

After we put our top findings in "cards of knowledge" which we used in a  later workshop. 

USER INTERVIEWS

After general research it was decided the next step was to interview professionals working in the industry. 

We took contact with seven former Hyper Island students working as either UX - Designer or Art Director. The questions were focused on how they worked, what they thought of the industry and what skills where relevant to them.

The common factor in the answers concerned skills. Especially soft skills, like being able to work with others and share ideas as well as creativeness.

”..Good at team work/development, being able to use both sides of the brain, aka being creative while rational, strategic thinking.” 

Work with others and how you work with colleagues is the most important skill. The skills that make you work, create, give feedback, get feedback and to be able to sell your ideas and get along even with people you have a hard time to work with.”

IDEATION

PROCESS 

 

The interviews and the general search information was put in the knowledge cards. Since the common thread in this project was centered around teamwork and creativity, that became the need focused on. From that need we brainstormed over finding a help/solution to promoting creativity and teamwork in a work environment. 
 

The brainstorming lead to and idea for a mind mapping tool. After that more descriptive research on mindmaps was done. 

PROTOTYPE & USER TEST

PROCESS 

During the user test we had seven people try the prototype and give verbal feedback about their experience. The feedback was mostly concerning the many features, for example at this stage there was the information function and the brief creating function,  and the purpose of the app was a bit unclear when one joined the app. Some buttons were also too small and sometimes the wordings made the purpose hard to understand. We changed these things to refine the mindmapping tool.

 

THINGS I LEARNED
 

 

  • Too many functions may make users confused, especially if not categorised properly. 
     

  • UX Writing, good descriptions for user to understand properties, is super important.
     

  • High fidelity prototypes are not the best medium when one want to test the concept rather than a function. The users focus more on details like fonts and such rather than what I wanted to test sometimes.
     

  • Also I learned more about Figma as a protyping making program.
